Tour de Cure Italian-Style

Me and the team doctor rented bikes, so I could ride on Tour de Cure day. Fortunately, for me, he enjoys reading maps and figuring out routes. We tooled along the very narrow, two-lane road with no shoulder for only a little while before we found access to a riverside trail. We encountered a number of fishermen and we stopped and took a picture. We went south on the trail for a little while, going by all kinds of cool, old farm buildings, wineries, kiwi farms and more. It’s Over, I Quit

I’m just trudging along and this couple of senior citizens comes up from behind. They are both decked out in colorful running garb with compression socks and arm sleeves. He gets my attention. I take out an earbud. He asks, “Has you pack sprung a leak or are you just sweating?”

Good Job, Old Man

But then I lost it. No mojo. No energy. Did I give too much too early? I don’t know, but in no time flat, I’m trudging up the trail like an extra on the Walking Dead. I’m beat. Feel like dogshit. When I stopped to catch my breath, I put my hands on my knees and suck air. On one of these proud rest breaks, I see these two little feet approach me. One day as I stepped out of my office, I was hit with a serious gale force, Wizard-of-Oz-in-black-and-white wind and pelts of rain, before I even got on my bike. On the ride home, it was stormy, cloudy, ugly, windy and rainy. I even saw some lightning strikes. For a while there I was worried about seeing some flash flooding … in my pants. Continue reading

A Bike Ride with Other People

On Saturday, May 17, I went for a bike ride with other people. Prior to Saturday, I had done three other rides with other people; two with Bill Kellick, one with Sam Van Why. 6,000 other rides by myself and my thoughts. Good Lord, I’m a sad and lonely individual. Continue reading

Sugarlump

I’m going to write to Sammy Hagar and see if the Red Rocker will hook up the Red Rider with a signed bottle of tequila and rum from me to auction off for my Tour de Cure fundraising. I love this idea. I’m more confident that I can get this done then I am about breaking my record to Barr Camp. Continue reading

I Think I Cut a Nerve

I stand up and immediately notice something terribly wrong with my right foot. It feels like someone has pounded a nail right into the top of my foot. I can’t put any weight on it. I’m experiencing a stigmata. Continue reading
