My Review | A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

A Good Scent from a Strange MountainA Good Scent from a Strange Mountain by Robert Olen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain is a series of 15 short stories told from the point of view of various Vietnamese immigrants living in or around New Orleans. I found the collection to be an amazing feat of writing with each chapter assuming a new character, voice and tone. The book is “remarkable … for how beautifully it achieves its daring project of making the Vietnamese real.”

The author, Robert Olen Butler, is a Vietnam War veteran, who speaks fluent Vietnamese. He won the Pulitzer Prize for this collection.
